My thoughts about June spent in St. Augustine, FL with Mary and Pete.

Adventures, Adventures.

I slept on the couch last night. Mary and Pete were very concerned to find me on the couch this morning on the couch. As if they thought I had landed there or was sleeping on the toilet.

I finally got going and walked down the street and into the historic part of town. I walked up and down the streets watching tourists. I was looking for Pizza Alley but finally gave up and went into Pizza Time. I picked a slice of the "Grandma's" pizza.  It was so good. The herby spice of garlic in the sauce was just right and the cheese was nice and Earthy. I could tell it was aged.

I then was enticed by the sign in this Pizza Time place that said "Homemade Cannoli" so I challenged the owner and said I'd like to try them, and I'd give him my opinion, which he was interested in when I told him I was Italian.  I did not take a picture of the Cannoli, it was very good, however not as good as Grandma's. It definitely had cream cheese in and a little/if not none at all ricotta cheese.. I let him know I thought it was good but not like Grandma's. He replied, "Well maybe Grandma should come here and work!" I bit my tongue but wanted to quickly reply, "She's dead, thanks". I just laughed and walked out.

I then went in and out of stores, bought a dress, chocolates and then wanted to kill some time so waited to get a henna tattoo in a small, open hut that sold airbrush and henna tattoos. While waiting my turn I listened as the woman with the girl getting the tattoo asked him questions. I learned he grew up in Belgium and spent some time in Chicago as well. He said Florida was his favorite. That they were just enough laid back for him. When he saw me I asked him if he had a bird tattoo and he opened the book directly to the page where a sparrow sat, just like my sister's (only she has a swallow, technicality). I chatted with him a bit, it was fun listening to his accent and watching his blue eyes as they traced the sparrow. I put the sparrow on my wrist. I finally peeled the henna off an hour or so ago to find that there were bubbles in the henna. Lame. He said if I ever get bored to come back by the henna place. I probably won't take him up on that offer. But who knows, if I get bored enough...

Mary is concerned that I am talking to myself and wanting to sleep on the couch in front of the tv, she said we better meet Jovie (a friend of her's daughter that is about my age) stat. I agree. Even if she's super lame, it'd be nice to see someone my age. To know that they at least exist out here! Haha

Mary made sure I had everything to make dinner. She has this really good Spicy Vodka Cream Sauce with Penne pasta. It has Italian sausage in it, and Mary was nice enough to take it out of the casing for me and put it in a baggie so I only had to drop it in.

I didn't get any pictures of me fixing it because I totally forgot.

Here was the finished product:

I has a really nice time walking around today, and I didn't even notice how hot it was, until I stood up from the henna place and sweat rolled down my leg, which was kind of disgusting. I was followed home by a little bug that kept bzzzing in my ear. It was super annoying. But maybe he/she needed someone to talk to, as well. I am really loving it here, except at nights, when I start to really miss my family and home, and especially my room, which sits across from mom and dad's room and has a tv, twin bed and I can leave the hall light on. To Mary and Pete it sounds like I sleep in an over stimulated state, but really I don't. Often at home I sleep without the tv on and the door closed.

It's just a strange house, no matter if it was identical to mine, I'd still miss time.

I can't wait to meet Jovie and go to the beach everyday. A bus system does go that way but Mary told me that, while she doesn't want to tell me what to do, she doesn't feel comfortable with me taking the bus system all the way there. I'm still afraid of the bike. I wanna get my nails done, next venture, perhaps?

We'll see!

Goodnight,

Sarah

  1. The dinner you made looks amazing! Glad you are getting an opportunity to see what it feels like to be away from home for an extended amount of time, as I am sure it will spark new ideas and passions.
